These little dogs were dumped at an animal hospital by a "breeder" who wanted to get rid of them....She is still breeding. Despite Tink only have two legs and Tyler only three, they are still full of joy at the life they've been given.

Campaign to Get Obama a Mutt

So the story goes that Senator Barack Obama promised his daughters that they could have a dog, if he could run for President. Apparently, the AKC is all over this news and wants Senator Obama to purchase a purebred, and has even suggested several breeds that would go along well with his family.

Best Friends Animal Society (and us here at Dog Living Magazine!) think that the Obamas should set an ethical example and choose to ADOPT instead of BUY. Hey, if they want a purebred, they can still get one from a breed rescue. There are tons of options out there.

Best Friends Animal Society has launched www.obamafamilydog.com to try and convince Senator Obama that adoption is the best option. As the letter from Best Friends Animal Society states, "What's more American than a mixed heritage? Or, even if you have a pure one, working your way up from hard knocks?"

So check it out, and whether you're Republican or Democrat, join the campaign to promote adoption!

Prison Dogs

These dogs are behind bars, but they didn't do anything wrong. The Pawsitive Partners Prison Program is southeastern North Carolina's first companion dog prison program and was created by the Monty's Home organization. The program is similar to the Department of Correction's Leash of Life program, which is in place at other state institutions.

Under the program, dogs selected by trainers from a local shelter will live at the prison and specially screened inmate "trainers" will care for and work with the dogs during an eight-week training period. Under the guidance of trainers from Monty's Home, the inmates will train the dogs to AKC Good Citizenship standards. After completing the program, the former shelter dog will be ready for a forever home and will already know basic obedience commands and household manners.

The program not only benefits the dogs who are rescued from the shelter, but the inmates in the program benefit as well.

Kennels are under construction at the Pender Correctional Institution in Burgaw, NC. The state is paying for kennel construction, but all other costs of the program will be picked up by Monty's Home, a non-profit.

Trainers from Monty's Home will select the first five dogs from a local shelter in late August. After temperament evaluation and heartworm testing, another team of volunteers will arrange spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations. The first training session is scheduled to begin September 23rd.

Tips for a Dog-Safe Independence Day

PETS 911 reports that the number one day of the year for lost pet reports (specifically dogs) is July 4th. And yes, the noise and commotion from fireworks celebrations is the reason. To keep your dog from bolting from the loud noises and outdoor celebrations you can take some simple precautions.

Be extra careful when attending fireworks shows with your dog. Make sure you have him or her on a secure leash and collar.
Consider leaving your dog inside during the fireworks and leave a television or radio playing so the loud noises won't be as distracting or overwhelming.
Never, ever, EVER leave your dog alone in a hot car! It can still be muggy even into the early evening, so if you wouldn't stay in the car, don't even think of leaving your dog in the car.
If your dog is enjoying the outside festivities, make sure there is plenty of access to water and shade.
In case the unthinkable happens, and your dog bolts because of the commotion, make sure he or she is wearing ID tags. It will greatly increase your chances of getting him or her back home safely.

"It's important to take extra care of your pets on July 4 because not only is it the middle of summer but there is a lot of activity going on," said PETS 911 Director Tracyann Mains. "Pets will instinctively panic in an uncomfortable situation, so please take the appropriate precautions."

Online Auction to Clone Your Dog

We must admit, this is a little disturbing to us. As much as we'd love to see replicas of our Assistant Editors, Ollie and August, we're not so sure it's a good idea. It might be a little freaky, in fact. Sure they'd look the same, but they wouldn't BE the same, and that's creepy.

However, a California company is holding an online auction where bidders can do just that...Bid on the chance to have their four-legged companion cloned. They're billing it, "The Most Exclusive Auction & Giveaway in the World."

BioArts International successfully cloned the family pet of CEO Lou Hawthorne and now they've launched a global online auction to clone five dogs. Beware, this auction isn't for the average dog owner. Bidding will begin at $100,000 and go up from there. Participants can register at www.bestfriendsagain.com.

But wait, there's more. Can't afford to pony up the hundred grand? For us poor folks, they're also giving away a cloning to one lucky winner. Contestants simply complete an entry form and a 500-word essay on why they feel their dog deserves to be cloned.

Sorry, we still think it's creepy.

Shelter Dogs Being Released into East Arkansas Forest??

A release from the ASPCA reports that dogs from a shelter in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas were released into a nearby national forest because the shelter ran out of space!

ASPCA President and CEO Ed Sayres says, "Lack of resources is no excuse for animal cruelty" and "releasing domesticated animals into the wild where they cannot fend for themselves is inhumane, and is by no means a suitable response to inadequate shelter space."

The release goes on to say:

“The abandonment of animals is a Class A misdemeanor in Arkansas,” said Randall Lockwood, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Anti-cruelty Initiatives and Legislative Services at the ASPCA. “The Mayor’s recommendation to release these dogs into the wild is supporting a blatant act of animal cruelty. He is advocating, aiding and abetting the commission of a crime.”

While the ASPCA has long been the voice for animals nationwide, its law enforcement powers are limited to acts of animal cruelty in the five boroughs of New York City. Members of the public can take action by contacting the Arkansas State Attorney General and asking him to take this matter seriously (http://www.ag.state.ar.us/contact_us_form.html).

Paw Jam a Howling Success

A Bowl for Dogs Who Inhale Their Food

A DogPause bowl arrived on our doorstep today and we are already excited about it. Assistant Editor August is what you'd call a fast eater. She gulps down her food faster than you can get your hand out of the way.

We immediately tried out the DogPause bowl and our little Assistant Editor couldn't wait to dig her nose into it. It's a keeper! She still beat her brother to the finish line, but of course that's because Ollie just licks his food and waits for her to finish before he will eat his.

You'll hear more about the DogPause bowl in the July/August issue.

Ollie & August Take on Table Rock Mountain

Ollie and August put on their hiking boots and made the nearly 8 mile trek up to Table Rock Mountain in South Carolina. It took about 5 hours roundtrip and it was a VERY strenuous hike. Back at the campsite, both pups flopped down on the air mattress and passed out.
